Enabling Referrals

The referral system is integrated with the invitation feature. When members invite others and those invitations are accepted, the referral is tracked.
isActive
boolean
Enable referral tracking. When on, the system records who referred each new member.

Configuration

numberOfReferralsNeededForSignup
number
If set, new users must be referred by an existing member to register. This creates an invite-only membership model.
  • Set to 1 - Requires one referral to register
  • Set to 0 or leave empty - Open registration (referrals tracked but not required)

How Referrals Work

Tracking Flow

1

Member sends invitation

Existing member invites someone using the invitation feature.
2

Invitee registers

New user clicks the invitation link and completes registration.
3

Referral recorded

The system links the new member to their referrer.
4

Stats updated

Referrer’s count increases and appears in their referral stats.

What’s Tracked

  • Referrer (who sent the invitation)
  • Referee (who joined)
  • Date of referral
  • Status (pending, completed)

Viewing Referral Data

For Administrators

Access referral reports to see:
  • Top referrers
  • Referral trends over time
  • Conversion rates (invites sent vs. accepted)

For Members

Members can see their own referral activity:
  • Number of successful referrals
  • Status of pending invitations
  • Who they’ve referred

Invite-Only Mode

When numberOfReferralsNeededForSignup is set to 1 or more:
  • Public registration is disabled
  • Users must receive an invitation to register
  • The registration page shows a message explaining the invite-only policy
  • Invited users can register normally
Invite-only mode significantly limits growth. Only use it if your organization specifically requires controlled membership.

Use Cases

Understand how your organization grows. Identify whether growth comes from referrals, marketing, or other channels.
Identify members who actively bring in new people. Recognize them with badges or acknowledgment.
Create invite-only membership for exclusive groups or beta programs.
Referrals tend to bring higher-quality members. Members refer people similar to themselves.

Combining with Gamification

If you have the Gamification module enabled, you can:
  • Award points for successful referrals
  • Create badges for referral milestones
  • Display leaderboards of top referrers

Best Practices

Ensure the invitation feature is easily accessible and the process is simple.
Publicly recognize or thank members who bring in new people.
A member who refers 5 active participants is more valuable than one who refers 20 inactive accounts.
If you offer rewards for referrals, ensure they don’t encourage gaming the system.
